About the organization

PKOK is a humanitarian, community-based organization. It was set up in 2016 and works from Kasarani, Nairobi.

The people who started it were looking at unemployment, poverty, and the way young people and women were left out of local decisions. The idea was simple enough: work with the community on those problems, rather than arrive with a programme already written.

Since then the organization has reached more than 1,400 young people through mentorship, skills training and peace activities, and more than 100 women’s groups on financial literacy, how a group is governed, and small income work. Project work has been carried out in 10 counties, with local leaders, government offices and other organizations.

Young people take part in the work. The same is true of the women’s groups: the training is there so the group can keep going after the session ends.

Purpose

Vision

A peaceful society in which people can support themselves, whatever background they come from.

Mission

To work with communities — especially young people, women and groups that are usually left out — through knowledge, skills, mentorship and practical opportunities.

How a piece of work usually starts

  1. Talk to the people living with the problem. That includes local leaders. The activity is shaped from that conversation.
  2. Train and mentor with the group, not as a single speech. Skills, follow-up and, where it helps, a link to someone who can do more than we can.
  3. Leave something the community can continue. A women’s group that can run its own records. Young people who will talk to their peers. A family that has a way to handle the next argument.

What we hold ourselves to

Integrity
Honest dealings with communities and partners.
Inclusivity
Room for people who are usually not in the room.
Accountability
We answer for what we said we would do.
Transparency
Partners and communities are told what is going on.
Human dignity
Respect for the person in front of us.
